You can locate the IP address from your router’s interface or use the DiskStation Manager (DSM) setup wizard. Once you are done setting up and plugging in the DS220j with LAN, all you need to do is start a browser and load the IP address. In addition, there is a Gigabit LAN port and three USB 3 ports. The exclusive has LED indicators and a small opening at the back for airflow keeping the drives cool. You do have to put in some screws though for better protection and keeping the HDDs in place. As the enclosure uses the SATA interface, you can essentially plug in the hard drives and get started with the setup. When it comes to setting up, the DS220j is fairly straight forward. So, for the purpose of this guide, we decided to go with the best and in our experience, these drives worked like a charm. A simple search on Google and Reddit will yield that the WD Red line of HDDs are the industry standard for network-attached storages. Last but not least, for streaming content, you need HDDs that have a high RPM and these drives can go up to 7200rpm. These drives are meant to be kept on 24/7 and work flawlessly with Synology’s RAID error recovery control feature. For the DS220j, we used 2X 6TB WD Red Pro drives for storing innumerable amounts of data such as images, movies, music and our entire PC backup. These drives are the industry standard amongst “data hoarders” simply because they are more reliable and specifically optimised for NAS systems. There are plenty of options available but we recommended getting the WD RED or WD RED Pro HDDs for this purpose. I’ve tried lying down in a darkened room without success.While Synology only sells the NAS (network-attached storage) enclosures which means you need to get your own HDD for storing data. I’m new to much of this so would welcome any suggestions for solving this problem.
Selecting SMB1 in Plex appears to make no difference so the system is currently set to SMB2/SMB3. The router is a BT Home Hub 6.0A and think the Server and SONOS Devices are on the same network.
The home network does not have remote access enabled. Ideally I’d also like to be able to play music simultaneously on several SONOS speakers but for now just being able to play on one of them would be good.

This is the case on all the laptops and Apple Devices.Īfter much online searching,reading and experimenting, I am still unable to solve the problem of how to use Plex to play music from a Synology NAS on our SONOS system.
However there seems to be an issue with connectivity between the Plex Media Server and SONOS.Īlthough clicking the play icon at the right hand side of Plex’s top toolbar enables one of the several SONOS speakers to be selected from a dropdown list, a ‘Playback Error’ appears when ‘Play’ is clicked. All the devices can access the music on the NAS using the Plex Media Server and play that music on the devices’ own internal speakers. I have also installed Plex Media Server on the Synology NAS and have installed Plex on the laptops and Apple Devices. I have added the associated ‘Music Library’ to SONOS without difficulty and can now use the SONOS App on our laptops and Apple Devices to play music from that Library without any issues. I am now in the process of populating the Synology DS418Play NAS recently added to the home network with our CD collection, etc. Our SONOS One System can be controlled using the SONOS App either from our laptops or Apple Devices.
